iPhone Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide (Big Nerd Ranch Guides)

Great Price "iPhone Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide (Big Nerd Ranch Guides)" for $27.28 Today

I move from software technologies almost yearly, starting with PHP to ASP.NET and now starting iPhone development, so each year is basically another library of books I have to buy to teach myself the language. I've read a ridiculous amount of computer books, ranging from the terrible (super boring, dense) to the insultingly easy ones (that basically treat you like a 4th grader learning programming.)

This, thankfully, is a fantastic mix of being incredibly easy to pick up and read, and also super informative. As far as iPhone development goes, this will be my 4th introductory book I've picked up, trying to get a handle on developing for the platform. The other books all typically tend to throw you into immediately coding, and never really actually explain why you're doing what you're doing, or make sense of any of it. Yes, this book does start off with an example chapter that you basically just copy word for word, but that's mostly to get your feet wet before actually digging through all the details and building your foundation.

In the first 3-4 chapters of this book, I already feel like I have a complete grasp on subjects that I did not yet understand from the 3 previous books I've read. I sort of had an idea why I typed '*' in front of names, or what @property (retain) statements meant, but I never fully understood what I was doing--it was mostly just "well, I read it, so it must be the way to do it." Basically, the other books got me about 75-80% there, but this one is 100%. The last 20 I feel is the most important, because that's when you finally begin to understand the concepts of the language, which let you move onto the more complex stuff with confidence.

Another reason I feel this makes a great coding book is the layout of each page. I can't tell you how important it is to present all that text + code in a meaningful, organized way. I've read some books where they just hit you over the head with instructions, with almost no visual clues and with fragmented code samples. But the pages in this book have plenty of white space per page, have plenty of illustrations and each code sample is commented (an appropriate amount) to give you hints as you're typing code as to what you're doing.

Finally, and thank goodness for this, the first example in this book that you write is NOT a Hello, World app :)

In summation, if you're like me and have started to read a few books (or maybe you haven't, I wish I could have started with this one) and are looking for a way to really feel confident with iPhone core concepts, then pick this book up and give it a read. I can't wait to get started on the many project ideas I have!

This is now the definitive iPhone programming guide - TB-10 Pilot - Columbus, Ohio
This is going to become the new definitive guide for iPhone application development!

When I read the book I felt that I was actually talking to a real person explaining it to me.

The book is organized in a 'class in session' format where a concept is described, explained and then you are given a small project to type in, play with and modify. What is extremely surprising is that ALL the code works! I have yet to find a typo in any of the code examples. And better yet, the Kindle version displays all the graphics in full color if you use the MAC kindle reader! I bought both the paperback for a desk reference and the kindle version for fast access.

But the way the book is structured, if you follow the examples as you read, you will amass a huge amount of working and 'REUSABLE' code in your projects. And also, you will remember where and why you entered that code and where you can go back to get it. Another super plus is that almost every method, section and even line segment code are commented so you can see exactly what each snippet of code does.

For an old PL/1 and VB6 and .net person, all it took was just learning the Objective C syntax and apply that to the objective programming models I already know. Delegates = Callbacks, IB = Form Builder, etc. Once I figured that out it was very easy to understand what Joe and Aaron were saying. I already updated real-time some of my older apps with new functionality just by using the examples in this book.

If you are new iPhone programmer or want to know about how it work, go no farther. This is the book for you!

Misleading on OpenGL ES. - Marc R. Bublitz -
The book promises "Dive into animation and effects, using Core Animation and OpenGL ES" but there is no OpenGL ES in the book. The authors state that they wrote a chapter for it, then rewrote it, then rewrote it, then decided to leave it out and put the information into another book.

The rest of the book seems like it is well written and gets to the point without a lot of fluff, but seeing as I specifically ordered the book for the OpenGL ES information then had to go through a return process because I was mislead by the publishers I cannot rate this any higher than a three star.

Professional iPhone and iPod touch Programming: Building Applications for Mobile Safari (Wrox Professional Guides)

Great Price "Professional iPhone and iPod touch Programming: Building Applications for Mobile Safari (Wrox Professional Guides)" for $9.75 Today

I've never owned a Mac (until now) and never done any development for that platform. While this book doesn't intend to cover the recently released iPhone SDK (it was published before the SDK's release), it does provide excellent coverage of web-based development for the iPhone (and iPod Touch). It leverages a free, open-source library to take much of the grunt work out of it, but also provides detailed code samples and examples and enough information so you could probably do it without the library should you desire. If you're interested in making your site look and feel like an iPhone app, this book will get you there. You should understand HTML, CSS and, preferably, a modicum of Javascript to get the most out of the book.

iPad Application Development For Dummies

Great Price "iPad Application Development For Dummies" for $17.38 Today

//ARE YOU LIKE ME?//

Who am I? (Feel free to skip this part. I only provide this for those who are noobs like me). I'm a busy working professional and tech hobbyist who built his computer from the ground up, hacks or "jailbreaks" any device I can, uses the "advanced" features of intricate software suites such as Adobe CS4, feels equally comfy in Mac and PC world, etc. and blah blah, who learned everything the hard way - trial and error, countless hours of slamming my head in the wall, support forums, etc. Much of my woes come from the fact that I have the attention span of a 3 year old. Oh, and I've never taken a formal "tech" class, I'm not an engineer, and I know NOTHING, ZILCH, NADA about programming. I've never ever ever written even a single line of code (save again for pretty decent websites I've built using Dreamweaver, which writes the code for you). Anyway, I love Apple products (but don't worship them), yet I've never had an itch to "program" for any of them until the iPad. I simply love (okay, maybe it is worship) the way the iPad lays out content and media. So much so, that I'm determined, for no clear reason, to write an app for it. So like I normally do with these impulses, I registered and downloaded the iPhone SDK and Apple videos and jumped right in to writing my app because I was told it was "easy" - ah, not so fast. After the first Apple video and barrage of error messages in the SDK, I realized I was in over my head - way over. So, given the fact that I've already "built my app in my head" and that I'm impatiently trying to put it in action, I wanted something quick to get me there, because like my virtuoso guitar solos "in my head," my product is not quite performing like it is in my mind's eye. So I looked for help doing what I normally do - buying a bunch of books that I never read (I have a whole library of books on various "teach yourself" topics). Fortunately for me, as of this post, there were only a few that were geared toward someone like me, and only one that was dedicated to the iPad. I say fortunately for me, b/c I've never been a fan of the "Dummies" series, but picked this up b/c it was all there was. I'm thanking my lucky stars.

//BEGIN REVIEW//
This particular book is about as much - no, even more - than you can expect from a book introducing something like Objective-C, the iPhone SDK/xcode, and Cocoa Touch to an absolute programming "dummy". Again, in typical fashion, I quickly glossed over the beginning and tried to jump right into the "fun stuff". DON'T DO THAT. This book is so well organized and easy to read that you actually SAVE TIME by starting from the beginning and working your way through the examples and chapters. It doesn't take long at all. I've made my way through 3/4 of it in about 4-5 days (only in free time) and I can say that I'm not even the same person today that I was 4 days ago - it really is that good. The book is calibrated to someone who knows NOTHING about any of this, but yet it doesn't leave out the important things that everyone needs to know (e.g. the code examples). And when it's "glossing over" something, it tells you - exactly what someone like me needs. By the time you're 3/4 of the way through this book, you will understand about 3/4 of what you need to know to be dangerous with xCode/interface builder, and the rest of iPhone SDK. Unfortunately, that 3/4 is not enough to get you to that killer app - and that 1/4 remaining is where the wheat is separated. You will eventually need to learn Objective C programming. BOTTOM LINE: if you want a quick orientation into iPad/iPhone programming, enough to orient you and set you on course, this is a GREAT start. With this foundation, you can easily build your skills in no time using additional resources which I mention below. The same thing is true if you're new to Objective C but you've programmed other languages, such as C++. Only for those like that, you will get even more out of this book. I can't recommend this enough.

I will update when my killer app is online!!!

//END REVIEW//

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: If you are a beginner like me, I suggest you get a book on Objective-C and one on Cocoa Touch Programming, in addition to this one. Now, based on what others have said here, I avoided Neil Goldstein's book on Obj-C, but I am now strongly reconsidering after reading iPad for Dummies. That said, I'm also reading "Programming in Objective-C 2.0" by Stephen Kochan and that has been invaluable for filling in the gaps; it's outstanding for the total beginner. I also picked up Sams Teach Yourself "Cocoa Touch Programming" in 24 hours which has been pretty good, but assumes some very basic knowledge. I usually read a chapter or so of each book at a time and find that this pace seems to work. I also downloaded all of Apple's videos which are so so. The MUCH BETTER series is done by Stanford and is available free on iTunes U - definitely download those for additional help. There are other resources too, but start with iPad for Dummies and build from there.

Excellent - Anthony Lawrence - Middleboro, MA USA
I just couldn't get interested in the iPhone - the small screen size just turned me off entirely and the pricey, locked in data plans didn't help either. When Apple announced the iPad I immediately saw the potential, ordered a 3G iPad (not shipped yet as I write this review), and set out to learn to program in the iPhone/iPad SDK.

Toward that end, I've been reading stacks of iPhone development books and while many of them are very good, none are as good as this as an overall introduction. That it focuses on iPad is important to me, but even without that focus I would still be praising this.

What I found most valuable were the chapters devoted to explaining how an app all fits together - what does what, when and how. That explanation has been missing from every other book I've read - hinted at, but never spelled out step by step. That's very important for someone like me just coming into this world.

I was also very appreciative of the advice about not thinking of the iPad as just a larger iPhone. I realized that already, but concrete examples really hammered that point home.

(Interestingly, the app I have in mind needs too much screen real estate to run on an iPhone, but the iPad is really too big for it - the book made me realize that I need to rethink the design completely.)

I noticed that the reviews of the authors "iPhone Application Development For Dummies" are a mixed bag and I assume that the same wide range of "love it/hate it" will be seen here. As a rank beginner who has never done ANY programming of this type (all command line apps before this), I'm firmly in the "loved it" camp. No, it doesn't tell me everything I need to know - what does? It DOES give me a very clear roadmap and introduction and does so much more effectively than anything else I have read so far.

Iphone in Action: Introduction to Web and SDK Development

Great Price "Iphone in Action: Introduction to Web and SDK Development" for $14.77 Today

I think this book is great. iPhone development is very complex, and the authors of this book make it accessible by giving diving into enough detail to make you productive quickly while gently introducing the more complicated concepts in later chapters.

Like other reviewers, I'm more interested in SDK development than web. However, chapters 10-19 are devoted solely to that purpose, and you miss nothing by starting directly on chapter 10, and always having the web development portion there should you ever need it. This really is two books in one.

Websites and web apps can now behave like native iPhone apps, with great network integration.

iPhone in Action is an in-depth introduction to both native and web programming for the iPhone. You'll learn how to turn your web pages into compelling iPhone web apps using WebKit, iUI, and Canvas. The authors also take you step by step into more complex Objective-C programming. They help you master the iPhone SDK including its UI and features like accelerometers, GPS, the Address Book, SQLite, and many more. Using Apple's standard tools like Dashcode, Xcode, and Interface Builder, you'll learn how to best use both approaches: iPhone web and SDK programming. This book is intended as an introduction to its topics. Proficiency with C, Cocoa, or Objective-C is helpful but not required.

Most useless iPhone development book out there. - C. warner - on my laptop
This book is horrible. Many key object descriptions are just one sentence. Every time I turn to this book for a solution I come away disapointed and continue my search somewhere else.

spend you money somewhere else, this book is not worth the cost of printing.

I got this book for the webkit section, but... - Jonathan K. Ho -
I'm the type of person who loves to see full source examples instead of just being fed the concepts. Unfortunately this book gives a snippet here and a snippet there and does not build up an example you can latch onto to say "yes I got that concept down in practice." This book could be so much more....

iPhone SDK Application Development: Building Applications for the AppStore

Great Price "iPhone SDK Application Development: Building Applications for the AppStore" for $19.97 Today

While this book is not as comprehensive as some have wanted, I found it to be a nice beginners tutorial to writing iPhone applications. The book starts out with an objective-C primer. Since objective-C has such an "interesting" syntax this is badly needed, even though I come from a strong programming background.

Each section includes a reasonably complex sample that puts that section's material to use. Most of the sections also include a "Further Study" area that gives you some homework. This is where the user can expand his knowledge through research and working with the tools.

The book jumps around a bit by first going over simple UI patterns, then spending time talking about audio services and networking, only to come back and spend more time with UI controls, only to jump back into audio/video. Still, one has to remember that this is a reference book and not a novel so jumping around is ok.

The sample applications that I have tried so far are ok and I feel like I have a much better grasp on how the iPhone system works.

This book is not an XCode or Interface Builder tutorial.

good for advanced users - K. Addaquay - New York
i am surprised by some of the reviews this book is getting. personally..i think is WONDERFUL book...BUT not for beginners. i think if you already have a handle on things, this book can REALLY push your understanding to another limit. if you want to be held by the hand..step by step then please dont get this book, i totally understand where the other reviewers are coming from( YOU DONT BUILD APPS WITH INTERFACE BUILDING IN THIS BOOK ... everything is from scratch 100% code ). ...this book is a MIRACLE.

objective not subjective - J. Rawlings - Melbourne, VIC, Australia
Whats with all the complaining about how the api's and device capabilites SHOULD be??? who cares, keep your opinions to forums and blogs, no one wants to read about this who is starting out. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth as soon as you start reading.. asked myself the question, why is this guy even writing about the topic if he's so annoyed with the constraints?! Forget it, too frustrating to make any constructive progress.

Enterprise Web 2.0 Fundamentals

Great Price "Enterprise Web 2.0 Fundamentals" for $28.99 Today

It's perhaps slightly surprising to see this put out by Cisco Press. They usually deal with topics closely if not explicitly tied to Cisco hardware, or to Cisco sponsored credentialling.

The book has more general scope, for the most part. It talks in broad, largely nontechnical prose, about the Web 2.0. Explaining what this means in terms of blogs, social networking, wikis and other user-generated activities. But it also has meaning in terms of the mobile user, who might access the web from a cellphone, PDA or wireless netbook.

As to how the Web 2.0 is accomplished in a technical manner, the book describes various programming languages that are popular in building such websites. Think Ajax and Ruby on Rails, for instance.

The conceptual boundary of the Web is the so-called Semantic Web, a term proposed by Tim Berners-Lee. We get some airing here about the Semantic Web. You get to appreciate that this is still early times for it. The book also brings up cloud computing. Alas, the latter term is so vague, but to the extent that it has useful meaning, the book tries to educate you on this.

The last 2 chapters are where Cisco is actively promoted. Describing how Cisco uses things like blogs in their sales group. I'm not sure quite what to make of these chapters. Is it mainly to build mindshare about how Cisco uses these ideas? For instance, it mentions how Cisco won several awards for their projects. Good for them.

The appendices are extensive and quite good, if you want to use the book as a guide to far more detailed resources on the Web. In a way, the appendices somewhat impart the book the flavour of a review article in a scholarly journal, by their copious references to original texts.

Customer Review

Trying to Define the UnDefinable - John Matlock - Winnemucca, NV
So just what is this 2.0 version of the Web?

It's almost impossible to say as so many people come in with opinions that conflict with each other. The broadest definition seems to be that Web 2.0 uses the standard old fashioned web but uses it in a bi-directional way.

The web was started with the idea that it would be a way for scientists to share technical papers. It grew from there to providing things like e-commerce and then into allowing the user to assist in the providing of content. This web site, for instance allows the reader to make comments about books that (after scanning to eliminate mis-use) are displayed just after the main review of the book. In a limited way, according to the definition that some people use, this is the Web 2.0.

Other people define it differently, but the concept of two way communication and user participation seems to be key parts of the Web 2.0.

This book presents the Web 2.0 as a series of applications. Sort of like the definition of pornography: The Web 2.0 may not be able to be defined, but I know it when I see it.

From the standpoint of the webmaster trying to understand Web 2.0, here are what a bunch of sites are doing. And in reading about them and visiting them, you may get some good feelings about things you might want to incorporate into your site.

Designing the iPhone User Experience: A User-Centered Approach to Sketching and Prototyping iPhone Apps Overviews

Designing the iPhone User Experience provides an end-to-end overview of the user-centered design process, specifically for iPhone applications. After reading this book you will know how to:

  • Conduct upfront user and competitive research to inform your app’s vision statement, also known as the “Production Definition Statement.”
  • Brainstorm, sketch, and prototype your app concepts. The prototypes covered take many different forms, from simple paper to scripted videos.
  • Refine your app’s user interface and visual design, using best practices based on established design principles.
  • Make your app accessible to individuals with impairments, with specific attention to VoiceOver, the screen reading software built-into the iPhone.
  • Localize your app’s user experience with an emphasis on language, content, and culture.

While the book is focused on the iPhone and iPod touch, many of the principles you will learn here can also be applied to user experience design for the iPad. For example, the research methods in Part II, Defining your iPhone App, and sketching and prototyping in Part III, Developing your App Concept, can also be applied to the iPad. Many sections in Part IV, Refining your App Concept, are also relevant, however, there are some new iPad user interface controls and transitions that are not covered in this book. To learn more, you should take the time to read the iPad Human Interface Guidelines.
