Professional iPhone and iPod touch Programming: Building Applications for Mobile Safari (Wrox Professional Guides)

Great Price "Professional iPhone and iPod touch Programming: Building Applications for Mobile Safari (Wrox Professional Guides)" for $9.75 Today

I've never owned a Mac (until now) and never done any development for that platform. While this book doesn't intend to cover the recently released iPhone SDK (it was published before the SDK's release), it does provide excellent coverage of web-based development for the iPhone (and iPod Touch). It leverages a free, open-source library to take much of the grunt work out of it, but also provides detailed code samples and examples and enough information so you could probably do it without the library should you desire. If you're interested in making your site look and feel like an iPhone app, this book will get you there. You should understand HTML, CSS and, preferably, a modicum of Javascript to get the most out of the book.

iPhone SDK Application Development: Building Applications for the AppStore

Great Price "iPhone SDK Application Development: Building Applications for the AppStore" for $19.97 Today

While this book is not as comprehensive as some have wanted, I found it to be a nice beginners tutorial to writing iPhone applications. The book starts out with an objective-C primer. Since objective-C has such an "interesting" syntax this is badly needed, even though I come from a strong programming background.

Each section includes a reasonably complex sample that puts that section's material to use. Most of the sections also include a "Further Study" area that gives you some homework. This is where the user can expand his knowledge through research and working with the tools.

The book jumps around a bit by first going over simple UI patterns, then spending time talking about audio services and networking, only to come back and spend more time with UI controls, only to jump back into audio/video. Still, one has to remember that this is a reference book and not a novel so jumping around is ok.

The sample applications that I have tried so far are ok and I feel like I have a much better grasp on how the iPhone system works.

This book is not an XCode or Interface Builder tutorial.

good for advanced users - K. Addaquay - New York
i am surprised by some of the reviews this book is getting. personally..i think is WONDERFUL book...BUT not for beginners. i think if you already have a handle on things, this book can REALLY push your understanding to another limit. if you want to be held by the hand..step by step then please dont get this book, i totally understand where the other reviewers are coming from( YOU DONT BUILD APPS WITH INTERFACE BUILDING IN THIS BOOK ... everything is from scratch 100% code ). ...this book is a MIRACLE.

objective not subjective - J. Rawlings - Melbourne, VIC, Australia
Whats with all the complaining about how the api's and device capabilites SHOULD be??? who cares, keep your opinions to forums and blogs, no one wants to read about this who is starting out. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth as soon as you start reading.. asked myself the question, why is this guy even writing about the topic if he's so annoyed with the constraints?! Forget it, too frustrating to make any constructive progress.

The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone 3.0 SDK (2nd Edition)

Great Price "The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone 3.0 SDK (2nd Edition)" for $25.68 Today

It can be very frustrating trying to step into the iPhone/iPad world. There are plenty of "Hello World" examples, but after that it starts getting very confusing very quickly.

Worse, some of what you'll find is out of date - the SDK is a constantly moving target and even if it were not, there are so many different ways to accomplish the same goal that it's very hard to know what the best approach is for your particular project(s).

I suppose this book is already out of date. I'm still going to recommend it, because it really helped clear up some things I was very confused about.

The author doesn't recommend this as a rank beginners book. You'll need some "Hello, world" experience first and perhaps a bit more. However, I'd recommend buying this at the same time as you buy those getting started books because the first hundred and fifty pages or so really will help you understand things the beginners books don't mention at all.

I read the negative reviews and I understand that there may be flaws here from the viewpoint of more experienced or more pedantic reviewers. That's OK - Erica's book helped me and I'm quite sure it would help others.

By the way, because I've reviewed so many books and maintain a large technically oriented website, I often get books like this free as reviewer copies. This isn't one of those: I paid for it and definitely feel that it was worth the price.

The Best I ever bought, and superb service from Amazon! - Daniel Bonates - Brasil
I had the best experience in my life about buying books when I did it for this book, on this site. I receive a great support for tracking the shipment and as soon I got the book, I started to eat it. Its very impressive how the author seems to know exactly what you are working on, and what you need and to be perfect, teach you the best and short way to get what you want. This book is not for beginners, but intermediate instead and advanced. Wonderful and I recommend it a lot...

Overviews

Learning iPhone Game Programming provides an introduction into the world of writing games on the iPhone, iPod touch, and the iPad. The book assumes no previous knowledge of writing computer games on any platform and will lead the reader through the topics required to create a 2D game.

The book takes you through the process of building a classic 2D side-scrolling game for the iPhone/iPod touch. Along the way, you will be introduced to topics such as OpenGL and how to set it up and use it within a 2D environment, animation, working with bitmap fonts, how to create a tile map, creating a particle system, adding sound effects and music, collision detection, and more.

These concepts are introduced in a simple to understand format leading you from the concept itself to building the game project as you work through the book. This introduction and the implementation approach will also be supported by video tutorials for each chapter of the book. These videos will show the concepts from that chapter being implemented within the game project along with comments and information on what is being done.

Learning iPhone Game Programming takes a tutorial-based approach to iPhone game programming, providing you with the information you need to create your own games for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
